The Challenge

This patient was unhappy when her dentist splinted her teeth with composite to close diastemas and to provide seating for veneers!, particularly the excessive gingival display of the gums, overly small appearance of her teeth and the conspicuous spaces between them was a huge problem for her. On the negative side, her teeth were in severely damaged and required full crown preparation. Our challenge was to construct a new smile from scratch.

Our Solution

Following our standard protocol, we took comprehensive photos of the patient’s teeth and face. Then we performed a unique digital smile design (DSD) , followed by a printing a virtual wax-up model to allow for mockup and fully visualize the remaining amount of gingiva. Next, we 3D printed a periodontal surgical guide to both determine the correct level of the osseous bone and the new position of the gingival margin. The teeth were then prepared and the patient left the clinic immediately with full arch CAD/CAM provisional crowns milled at MINA Dental Laboratory. Two months later a lip repositioning procedure was performed by taking measurements from the printed guide. Final e.max crowns were then delivered and photographs were taken on the same day.

The Results

We achieved the patient’s goal of limiting the appearance of the gingiva and improving the appearance of her teeth, contour of her gingival in a subtle and naturally beautiful way. The result: a more elegant smile in complete harmony with her face and personality.
